A court in Sirajganj has rewarded a man with life term imprisonment for possessing 900 grams of heroin worth nearly Tk 1 crore in Salanga.
The convict, Rafiqul Islam, was also fined Tk 100,000. In default of payment, he will have to serve an additional six months in prison.
Judge Abu Khan Shaheen Konok of the Sirajganj Additional District and Sessions Judge’s Second Court pronounced the verdict in the presence of the accused at around 12:00PM on Wednesday (October 7).
Rafiqul Islam, son of late Shawkat Ali, is a resident of Dimbhanga village in Madarpur of Godagari upazila, Rajshahi.
Additional Public Prosecutor Md Anisur Rahman confirmed the matter, saying the court found the charges against Rafiqul proven beyond reasonable doubt under Section 36(1), Table 8(c) of the Narcotics Control Act, 2018.
According to the case statement, a team of Rapid Action Battalion-12 (RAB-12) conducted an anti-drug operation on August 23, 2022, on the road in front of Nesharia Hotel and Restaurant in Ramar Char area under Salanga Police Station.
During the operation, RAB members searched a passenger bus of Sithi Paribahan travelling from Natore to Sirajganj and arrested Rafiqul with 900 grams of heroin.
Two mobile phones allegedly used in drug transactions and cash were also seized from him.
Later, RAB-12 Deputy Assistant Director (DAD) Md Amzad Ali filed a case with Salanga Police Station under the Narcotics Control Act.
After examining the testimony and evidence presented during the trial, the court delivered the verdict on Wednesday.
